The Status Bar

The Status bar is the section of the Microsoft Word window that shows the status and statistics of your document. Two of the features that can be especially useful are the current page/total pages ratio and the overtype indicator.

The current page/total pages ratio indicates the page your cursor is on, as it relates to the total number of pages in the document. This feature often comes in handy when you need to print only certain pages of a document, or you are being charged for printouts and need to skip blank pages that you may or may not have known existed in the document. This feature also provides an instant page counter for your document, in case you are keeping track of the document's length.

The Overtype indicator (OVR) is used to alert you when the typing mode has been set to "overtype". Microsoft Word is set by default to Insert mode, which automatically pushes existing text as you type, thus accomodating your insertion. If this mode has been switched to overtype (usually by inadvertently pressing the Insert key on your keyboard), the text you type will replace the existing text, keeping the total character length of your document the same as you type. If the overtype indicator is on (OVR is black – not gray or faded), and you don't want to type over your existing text, simply double-click the OVR indicator or press the Insert key to return to Insert mode.
