Utah Valley University, in conjunction with state leaders and the Navajo Nation, was honored on Thursday for its work in bringing education and career-focused resources together to benefit the people of the Navajo Nation. The award, called Champions of Digital Literacy, was presented by Certiport.
UVU Vice President Val Hale, along with UVU assistant professor of digital media technology Thor Anderson and Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley, received the award Tuesday morning in a ceremony at Certiport headquarters in American Fork.
Through the assistance of a National Science Foundation Grant, UVU and Certiport have partnered to provide members of the Navajo people with the latest digital literacy to enable them to secure IT jobs without having to leave their communities. UVU programs such as Skilled2Succeed has served more than 500 individuals and more than 75 from the Navajo Nations. Three of these individuals have gone on to teach computer classes at the college level and on the Navajo Nation.
